These tools create derivatives for ordinary web, form and sharing workflows. Browser re-encoding removes embedded EXIF and GPS metadata. JPG cannot preserve transparency, so transparent pixels become white. Converting a JPG to PNG cannot recover detail already discarded by JPEG.
Keep original files for archival, medical, evidentiary, prepress, professional colour-managed or metadata-dependent work. GIF animation, SVG, HEIC and AVIF are not silently flattened by the current image tools.
