Number PDF pages without uploading the document
Page numbers make reports, proposals, manuscripts, meeting packs and merged scans easier to navigate and reference. DraftFort places clean vector text in a header or footer while the PDF remains on your device. There is no account, watermark or remote file-processing step.
The visual page picker solves a common numbering problem: the PDF page and the printed page number do not always match. You can leave a cover, title page or separator unnumbered and start the first selected page at 1.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Add the PDF. Drop the file into the tool or choose it from your device.
- Choose a format. Use a simple number, “Page 1”, “1 of 10”, or “Page 1 of 10”.
- Choose the position. Place the label at the top or bottom, aligned left, centre or right.
- Select the pages. Number every page, use Skip cover, or choose pages individually from the previews.
- Set the first number and style. Adjust the starting value, text size, edge margin and colour. The page cards show the planned sequence.
- Download a new copy. DraftFort adds the labels in your browser and saves a separate numbered PDF. The source file is not changed.
How numbering works when pages are skipped
Only selected pages participate in the number sequence, always in the PDF’s document order. For example, a 10-page document with its cover excluded and the first number set to 1 is numbered 1 through 9 on PDF pages 2 through 10.

This sequence is visible before download. If you need to change the order or remove separator pages first, use Organize PDF, then add numbers to the organized file.
Choose a page-number format and position
Bottom centre is a neutral default for many reports and manuscripts. Bottom right works well for simple business documents, while top positions can fit files whose footers already contain notes or branding. Check the page previews for clashes with existing content and increase the edge margin if a printer may trim close to the page boundary.
The “of” formats describe the selected sequence, not every physical page in the PDF. That keeps the displayed total consistent when a cover or divider remains unnumbered. A custom first number is useful when the file is one chapter or section of a larger document.
Page numbers are different from PDF page labels
This tool adds visible text to the page. Some PDF viewers also support internal page labels—for example, roman numerals in front matter or chapter-based labels in a navigation panel. Those viewer labels are a separate PDF feature and are not created here. DraftFort’s numbers are designed to appear when the document is viewed, shared or printed.
What happens to PDF quality and advanced features?
The number is added as vector text. DraftFort does not rebuild the full page as an image, so ordinary source text should remain selectable and page artwork is not intentionally recompressed. Mixed page sizes and existing page rotations are retained.
Saving a modified PDF can still affect advanced document structures. Digital signatures may become invalid, and forms, layers, accessibility tags, page labels, attachments, comments, links or viewer-specific features may not behave exactly like the source. Keep the original and check the downloaded copy when those features matter.

Can I add ‘Page 1 of 10’ to a PDF?
Yes. Choose Page 1 of 10, 1 of 10, Page 1, or the simple 1 format. In formats with a total, the last value is the final number in the selected sequence.
Can I number only certain pages?
Yes. Every page has a checkbox and visual preview. Numbers advance in the PDF's document order across selected pages, even if unselected pages appear between them.
Will page numbering reduce PDF quality or make text unselectable?
DraftFort adds selectable vector text instead of turning pages into screenshots. Existing text and artwork are not deliberately rasterised or recompressed. Complex forms, layers, tags and other advanced features should still be checked after download.
Will adding page numbers invalidate a digital signature?
It can. Page numbering modifies the PDF, so a viewer may report that a signed document changed after signing. Keep the signed original and, when possible, add numbers before the document is digitally signed.
Can it number a password-protected PDF?
No. DraftFort does not bypass PDF encryption. If you are authorised to edit the document, remove its password using the document owner's approved method before using the tool.
