Add a clear text watermark without uploading the PDF
A visible watermark can label a proposal as DRAFT, mark a reference copy as SAMPLE, or remind a recipient that a document is CONFIDENTIAL. DraftFort adds that text on your device. The source PDF, page previews, watermark wording and finished copy stay in your browser workflow instead of being transferred to a conversion server.
Use one centred watermark when the label should be immediately noticeable. Use the repeating layout when the status should remain visible across more of the page. Both layouts create PDF text rather than a screenshot of the complete page.
How to watermark a PDF
- Add your PDF. Drop the file into the tool or choose it from your device.
- Enter the watermark text. Type your own wording or start with Confidential, Draft, Copy or Sample.
- Choose a layout. Centre places one label on each selected page. Repeat creates a tiled pattern.
- Adjust the appearance. Set the text size, opacity, angle and colour. The page previews update while you work.
- Select the pages. Every page starts selected. Clear the selection when the watermark should appear only on particular pages.
- Download a new PDF. Your original file remains untouched.
Long watermark text is automatically reduced when necessary so it fits the page. Review the downloaded PDF before sending it, particularly when the source uses unusual page sizes or rotations.
Centre or repeat: which layout should I choose?

A lower opacity keeps the underlying document easier to read. A higher opacity makes the label more prominent but can obscure small text. Colour also affects contrast: neutral grey works on most pages, while red or blue can make a status label more noticeable.
What a visible PDF watermark does—and does not do
A watermark communicates context. It can help a reader identify a draft, review copy or sample at a glance, and it may discourage casual reuse. It does not encrypt the PDF, stop screenshots, prevent editing or guarantee that the recipient will follow a confidentiality request. Use access controls and an appropriate secure sharing method when the document itself needs protection.
Only watermark files you own or are authorised to modify. A watermark does not create ownership rights in material that belongs to someone else.
What happens to the original PDF?
DraftFort loads the file into browser memory and writes new vector text onto the selected pages. It does not deliberately rasterise the existing pages, so ordinary selectable text and vector graphics normally remain intact. The download is still a newly saved PDF, and advanced features can react differently to any edit.
Digital signatures are especially important: modifying a signed PDF can cause a reader to report that it changed after signing. Interactive forms, comments, layers, attachments, bookmarks and accessibility structure also deserve a check. Keep the untouched source until you have verified the new file in the viewer your recipient will use.

How do I add a watermark to a PDF?

Does DraftFort upload my PDF or watermark text?
No. The PDF is opened, previewed and watermarked locally in your browser. DraftFort does not receive or store the file, watermark text or finished document.
Can I watermark only certain PDF pages?
Yes. Every page has a preview and checkbox. Select all pages or choose only the pages that need the watermark before downloading.
Can I repeat the watermark across the page?
Yes. Choose Centre for one prominent watermark or Repeat for a tiled pattern across each selected page. You can also adjust the angle, size, colour and opacity.
Will the watermark flatten or reduce the quality of my PDF?
DraftFort adds vector text to the PDF instead of turning the full page into an image. Existing text and vector artwork are not deliberately rasterised. Always check complex forms, layers, accessibility tags and other advanced features in the downloaded copy.
Can a PDF watermark prevent copying or prove ownership?
No. A visible watermark can communicate status or discourage casual misuse, but it is not encryption, access control or conclusive proof of ownership. Do not rely on it to secure confidential information.
Will adding a watermark invalidate a digital signature?
It can. Changing a digitally signed PDF usually causes viewers to report that the document was modified after signing. Keep the original and watermark the document before signing when signature validity matters.
Can it open a password-protected PDF?
No. The tool does not bypass PDF encryption. If you are authorised, remove the protection using the document owner's approved method first.
