Reduce an image to a practical size ceiling
Some forms, portals and publishing systems reject an image above a stated file size. This compressor lets you enter a target such as 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB and process a batch locally. It reports the real output size instead of claiming a fixed percentage reduction before seeing the image.
JPG and WebP output use a quality search. DraftFort first tries your chosen maximum quality, then finds the highest setting that fits under the target. If even a very low quality remains too large, it reduces pixel dimensions proportionally and repeats the search. The source file is never overwritten.
How to compress an image to KB
- Choose JPG, PNG or WebP images. Add one file or a batch of up to 25.
- Enter the target per image. The default is 200 KB; change it to the limit required by your destination.
- Choose JPG or WebP for a strict ceiling. JPG is broadly compatible; WebP is often compact and can preserve transparency.
- Optionally limit dimensions. Enter maximum width or height if the
destination also has a pixel limit. A
0keeps that dimension unrestricted. - Compress and inspect. The result row shows new dimensions, actual bytes and whether the target was met.
- Download individually or as a ZIP. Original images stay unchanged.
Why “at or below” is more honest than “exactly”
An encoder cannot normally produce every possible byte count. Two neighbouring quality settings may jump from 198 KB to 205 KB. DraftFort keeps the result at or below a 200 KB ceiling when achievable. It does not append meaningless data to make the file display exactly 200 KB.
The familiar “KB” shown by this tool uses 1 KB = 1024 bytes. A destination may display decimal units or round differently, so leave a small margin below a hard portal limit when the submission is important.

Converting a screenshot with small text to a low-quality JPG can create halos. WebP or PNG may look better. A photographic PNG is often unnecessarily large, so JPG or WebP usually makes more sense there. Always inspect the downloaded result before deleting or sending the source.
Quality, dimensions and visual detail
File size is influenced by pixel count, detail, noise and output format—not just the quality slider. A smooth illustration compresses more easily than a noisy night photo of the same dimensions. That is why a reliable compressor must measure the actual encoded result rather than estimate from the original size.

Private processing and metadata boundary
The repeated quality tests happen on a browser canvas on your device. No image or thumbnail is sent to DraftFort. Re-encoding also means embedded metadata is not copied into the result. Preserve the original separately whenever metadata, colour profiles or archival fidelity are important.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compress an image to 100 KB or 200 KB?
Yes. Enter 100, 200 or another target in KB and choose JPG or WebP. DraftFort searches for the highest quality it can encode at or below that target and may reduce pixel dimensions if quality changes alone are not enough. Results depend on the image and browser.
Does the finished image have exactly the target number of KB?
Usually it is at or below the target, not exactly equal. Image encoders produce discrete file sizes, so adding filler bytes merely to display an exact number would provide no visual benefit and could be misleading.
Why might the compressor reduce image dimensions?
A detailed or very large image may still exceed a small target at the minimum useful encoder quality. In that case the tool reduces width and height proportionally and tries again so it can meet the size ceiling.
Can PNG be compressed to a target size?
PNG output is lossless, so this tool cannot promise an arbitrary target KB. Choose JPG for photographs or WebP for compact output when a strict size limit matters. PNG is appropriate when lossless pixels or transparency matter more than file size.
Are images sent to DraftFort?
No. Image decoding, quality searches, resizing and encoding happen in your browser. DraftFort does not receive or store the files.
Will transparent backgrounds be preserved?
WebP and PNG can preserve transparency. JPG cannot, so transparent pixels are placed on a white background when JPG output is selected.
Does compression remove EXIF and location data?
The newly encoded result does not carry the source file's embedded EXIF or GPS metadata. Keep the original if you need camera, copyright, location or evidentiary metadata.
