A software engineer resume example you can actually edit
Above is a working software engineer resume, pre-filled and ready to customise — replace the sample name, summary, skills and bullets with your own, watch the live preview update, and download a clean PDF. It’s built on our resume builder, so everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
The default is a senior full-stack sample. Use the starting-point buttons above the form for a junior/no-experience version built around projects or a backend engineer version focused on APIs and reliability. Replace every placeholder, employer and metric; a polished invented number is worse than an honest bullet without one.
What makes a strong software engineer resume
The experience bullets are where you can provide the clearest evidence of your contribution. Generic bullets list responsibilities (“responsible for backend development”); stronger bullets describe the change and a verified result:
- “Reduced API p95 latency 45% by adding caching and query optimisation”
- “Built real-time features serving 2M+ daily active users”
- “Cut production regressions 70% with an automated test suite”
Notice the pattern: what you did → the measurable result. Use numbers only when they come from a dashboard, test, ticket, review or another source you can defend. When you cannot measure the outcome, name the scope, constraint or technical decision instead.
Get past the ATS
Many employers use an Applicant Tracking System before or alongside human review. To keep the document straightforward to parse:
- Keep a single-column layout
- Use standard headings — Summary, Experience, Skills, Education
- Mirror the keywords from the job description in your skills and bullets
- Export real text, not an image — this builder produces selectable text
Our ATS-friendly resume guide has the complete checklist.
Then write the cover letter
A targeted cover letter can explain motivation or a career transition when the application calls for it. Use our cover letter generator and the guide on how to write a cover letter — or start from a blank resume builder if you’d rather not use the example.
Role source
Checked 14 July 2026: Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers — US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its duty list is useful vocabulary for responsibilities; the job posting remains the source for the exact technologies and outcomes an employer values.
Frequently asked questions
What should a software engineer resume include?
A concise summary, a skills section listing your languages and tools, and — most importantly — experience bullets that show impact with numbers (latency cut, users served, deploy time reduced). Recruiters skim for evidence you ship, not lists of responsibilities. The example above is pre-filled with this structure so you can replace the details with your own.
Is this resume ATS-friendly?
It is designed for ATS readability with one column, standard headings and selectable text. No template can guarantee parsing or ranking in every employer's system, so inspect the downloaded PDF and follow the file-type instructions in the job posting.
How long should a software engineer resume be?
Use the shortest length that shows relevant evidence clearly. One page is often enough for early-career engineers; experienced candidates may need a second page when the additional work is recent and relevant. Prioritise verified impact over an exhaustive history.
Should I list every programming language I know?
List the ones you're genuinely productive in and that match the job, strongest first. A wall of 30 technologies reads as padding; 8–12 relevant ones you can discuss in an interview is stronger.
Are my details uploaded anywhere?
