A free invoice generator set up for Australia

This is our invoice generator pre-configured for Australia — Australian dollars, 10% GST, A4 paper and short AU-style payment terms already in place. Add your business details and ABN, your client’s details, and download a professional tax invoice as a clean PDF. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.

What a valid Australian tax invoice needs

For sales of A$82.50 or more (including GST), the ATO requires a tax invoice to show:

  • The words “Tax invoice”
  • Your identity and ABN
  • The invoice date
  • A description of the items sold, with quantities and prices
  • The GST amount shown separately, or a statement that the total includes GST
  • The buyer’s identity or ABN for sales of $1,000 or more

Add your ABN to the business details, keep GST at 10% if you’re registered, and the totals update live as you type.

The ABN and GST essentials

Two thresholds drive Australian invoicing:

  1. The ABN — quote it on every invoice. Without one, your payer may have to withhold 47% of the payment under the “no ABN withholding” rule, which nobody wants.
  2. GST at A$75,000 turnover — registration is compulsory once you reach it. Registered? Charge 10% GST (the default). Not registered? Set GST to 0 and don’t display it — charging GST without registering isn’t allowed.

Getting paid faster down under

Australian small businesses typically use 7–14 day terms with EFT (direct deposit) — shorter than UK or US norms, which helps cash flow. Send a quotation to win the work and a receipt once you’re paid, so both sides have a clean record at tax time.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a document a valid tax invoice in Australia?

For sales of $82.50 (including GST) or more, a valid tax invoice must show the words 'Tax invoice', your identity and ABN, the invoice date, a description of the items, the GST amount (or a statement that the total includes GST), and the extent to which each item is taxable. This generator lets you show GST separately and add your ABN to your business details.

Do I need an ABN to invoice in Australia?

You should have an Australian Business Number to invoice. If you don't quote an ABN, the payer may be legally required to withhold 47% of the payment. Add your ABN to your business details field. You can invoice without registering for GST, but you cannot charge GST unless you are registered.

When do I have to register for and charge GST?

GST registration is compulsory once your turnover reaches A$75,000 (or $150,000 for non-profits). Once registered you add 10% GST — the default here. Below the threshold you can stay unregistered and set the GST rate to 0, but then you must not show GST on your invoices.

What paper size and payment terms are normal in Australia?

Australia uses A4 paper, which this template already selects. Payment terms of 7 to 14 days are common for small business and sole traders — shorter than the UK or US — with direct deposit (EFT) the standard payment method.

Is this Australian invoice generator free?

Yes — free, no account, no watermark. Your invoice is built entirely in your browser and never uploaded, so your ABN, clients and bank details stay private.
